FAQ

What are Mia Tsang's professional qualifications?

Our founder, Miss Mia, is a Registered Hong Kong Teacher holding a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. She earned her Master's degree in Teaching Chinese as an International Language and her Bachelor's degree in Chinese from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

She taught in local high schools for over 10 years, and some of her former students have already become high school Chinese teachers themselves. Her strong academic background and extensive teaching experience far exceed the industry average.

As an expat newly arrived in Hong Kong, should I learn Cantonese or Mandarin first?

It entirely depends on your lifestyle and career goals. If you wish to blend into the local community, chat effortlessly with local taxi drivers or restaurant staff, and build a local social network, Cantonese is your gateway. However, if your daily work involves frequent collaboration with Mainland clients and teams, or if you look at the broader Greater China market, Mandarin offers higher corporate utility. Many of our executive clients opt for our "Dual-Track Program" to master both simultaneously.

  • Is Cantonese or Mandarin harder to learn?
  • For Westerners, Cantonese pronunciation and listening are more challenging at the beginning due to its 6 tones and the gap between spoken and written forms. Mandarin, with its standardized grammar and only 4 tones, is relatively easier to start with.
However, Miss Mia's unique teaching methodology deconstructs both languages into simple, actionable formulas. As long as you master the correct Romanization and pronunciation patterns, you can easily break through the bottlenecks in a short period of time.
(Cantonese is widely described as having 6 contrastive tones (or 9 tonal categories when including "checked" syllables ending in \(-p\), \(-t\), or \(-k\)).

Do I need to learn how to write Chinese characters while learning to speak Cantonese or Mandarin?

In the beginner stage, absolutely not.
For busy corporate executives and expats, our curriculum follows a "Speaking and Listening First" principle. The initial phase focuses 100% on Romanization (Jyutping/Pinyin) and oral expressions to get you talking immediately. Once you have built a strong verbal foundation, you can choose to add character reading and writing based on your professional needs, which drastically reduces cognitive overload.
